Owner's Description

This 31.1 grams, .999 Ag, 40mm Chinese Panda coin had a limited mintage of 255,000 and currently has a NGC population of 2,510. The obverse depicts the Temple of Heaven with the date below. The reverse depicts a baby panda on a grid background, with fineness, weight and denomination below. The 1989 10 Yuan 1 oz. silver B.U. Panda is the first coin in the B.U. series. It can be found in a variety of lusters including proof-like, frosted and occasionally matte. This coin used to be common as many were saved as souvenirs. In recent years it has become more difficult to locate, especially in MS-68,69. MS-70 coins are very rare. The grid-like background of the coin created by artist Luo Yonghui is unique to the 1989 year and is also used on the 1989 100 Yuan platinum and 50 Yuan palladium Pandas. This popular coin is the starting point for a NGC Registry set of 1 oz. B.U. silver Pandas.
