Owner's Description

There are several 1888 patterns listed in the Hern's catalogue. The first patterns of the 1888 series have an indentation on both sides of the shield while the later issues patterns have none. In this collection there are both kinds with a listing of 3 types (Hern's catalogue lists several varieties). The major differences through the Orange Free state 1888 series is the change to the shield on the obverse. Please note that all the obverse patterns have a palm and laurel branch encircling and the words in Dutch "Oranje Vrijstaat" at the top. At the bottom on the banner is the wording in Dutch "Gedult en Moet" patience and courage. The following OFS patterns are listed in this category: 1). KM-PN9 with the lowest grade of PF62BN and a high of PF64RB. A total of 4 patterns listed. 2). Next there is only one listed in this collection of a KM-PN14 pattern graded PF63BN. 3). The biggest collection listed is of the KM-PN13 ranging from Unc details (altered surface - in my opinion a beautiful coin!) to a high of PF65BN. A unique graded MS65RB stands out. There is 8 listed in this collection. Mintage figures estimated are around 100 to 50 depending on the pattern type. As mentioned before, little evidence currently exists that there are indeed 100 samples out there to support the theory/ claim. In my opinion less than 50 samples or less are still in existence. On the reverse an oak and laurel branch encircle the denomination. A "V" mintmark is located at the bottom were the branches meet.
