Owner's Description

General Comments: Despite having a low 20,000 mintage in it's favor, 1917 is not the rare date it's made out to be. With silver prices rising, and the series discontinued, pieces were saved (or melted), not spent, in this last year of issue. Due to the discrepency between high market availability and a high catalog price point, and with most coins having a dullish luster coming from well-used dies, this is my least favorite date in the series. Beware! There are many nice raw Uncirculated coins still out there. In 2015-2016 alone the 1917 population nearly doubled at PCGS/NGC. More will be graded, and more may exist in Peruvian hoards. In truth, this is one of the more common dates in the entire series in mint state. All 1917's come with "R". Minor Varieties: 1. Repunched date 7/7, some also show repunching on the first "1" 2. o/o superscript o - Almost all coins feature this Most coins show extensive over-lettering, including initials "FG". The base of the 9 is usually connected to the loop. The size of the "S" in SOL varies. Availability: G-VF: Very Scarce (most coins did not circulate) XF-AU: Somewhat Scarce 60-62: Somewhat Common 63-65: Somewhat Common 66: Very Scarce Population Report (August 2016): NGC: One in 53; Two in 62; Four in 64; Three in 65; One in 66 PCGS: One in 58; One in 64; Two in 65; One in 66 Total at both services: 16; 14 in Uncirculated; 7 in Gem or better NGC also has two in UNC Details, bringing the total to 18. Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 28.50 VF: 37.50 XF: 50 Current KM: VF: 60 XF: 125 UNC: 235 2009 KM has 1917 at VF: 17 XF: 35 UNC: 75 Almanzar/Seppa smartly put the 1914 at a higher price point than the 1917. The 2009 KM prices were about right; the new exponentially higher prices reflect an overvaluation. Dealers often ask over 200 dollars for raw UNC coins, which rarely sell. Use the 2009 prices as a guide for raw coins. Certified MS 64/65 coins should bring 125-225. Of course, with the high catalog value, sometimes prices will get pushed higher. This was an auction ending at the same time, and by the same seller, as the 1903/1 PCGS MS 65 that went for $900, so take the winning bid with a grain of salt. Set Specimen: Tied with one other coin at PCGS for finest graded. A 66 by virtue of unabraded fields, strong strike, and pleasing if mellowed luster. A light fingerprint covers the top of the Obverse, and, strangely, a very small hair rests on Liberty's leg in the slab.
