General Comments:
LISTEN UP! If you want to take away valuable information from my research, this is a coin to pay attention to. 1896 TF-JR is an extremely overlooked, undervalued date/assayer combination, the biggest sleeper in the entire series. The price guides are completely backwards on this date compared to the 1896 F (see below). Uncirculated coins are very difficult. I only know of four. The raw Whittier example, my set coin, an NGC 61 (possibly IS the Whittier coin) and a raw 62 I own. Yet, if you can find one, a dealer is likely to base his price on the Standard Catalog price, thus giving you a great bargin.
Minor Varieties:
1. o/o superscript o All coins have initials JR
Availability:
G-VF: Scarce XF-AU: Rare 60-62+: Very Rare
Population Report (August 2016):
NGC: One in 61; One in 63 PCGS: None graded Total at both services: 2; 2 in Uncirculated
Value Guide:
1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 1 VF: 1.50 XF: 2.25 Current KM: VF: 9 XF: 11 UNC: 30 Last edition of KM had this date/assayer at 14 in UNC. Extremely undervalued, and still so. 1896 is priced 25 dollars higher in Uncirculated, yet is much more common. In strict Uncirculated, three figures should be a minimum, and overall prices should be similar to the 1893/1895. Fine/VF should bring 10-25 and XF/AU 30-65.
Mintage:
585,750 (with 1896 F.)
Auction Results:
Ebay 3/30/2015 VG 10ish $13.49 (since certified at PCGS!) Ebay 3/15/15 Choice AU details looks dull cleaned $46.99 BIN Ebay 11/3/15 Raw MS 64 $84 (Bought by me BIN as immediately upon posting. Graded by NGC as 63) Ebay 3/20/16 VF/XF $20 The Whittier Coin, sold in a Heritage lot in June 2006 appears to have no wear, and is likely not better than a 63.
Set Specimen:
Finest graded by two points over one other graded. A textbook MS 64, absolutely undergraded. A lovely original lusterous coin with no problems. Perhaps NGC didn't like the planchet adjustment marks at 12 o'clock on the obverse, but they are not unsightly and generally do not alter the grade regardless. A very rare coin at this grade level, one that I am proud to own as part of this set.
