Owner's Description

General Comments: 1903 is generally available in circulated grades, and can be found with patience in lower-end Mint State (ususally raw). Gem level coins, however, are difficult to find, moreso than 1901. Various overdates are often found, attesting to the use of older or well-used dies for the year. Die cracks are often seen around Obverse lettering. Overdates: 1. 1903/1 2. 1903/5/1 3. 1903/3 3. 1903/190? (FC) The first three are Flatt's designations. He notes that the "3/5/1" is definitely different from the "3/1", though the precise numerals may be up for debate. I assume that KM's 1903/13 corresponds to Flatt's 1903/3, though I'm not certain. The 1903/190? is a coin that sold on ebay 12/8/2014, featuring a dramatic overdate. All four numerals are over another numeral, although it's difficult to say exactly what the 3 is over. Some coins appear to have an o/o superscript o. Higher prices for these coins are not justified. Expect to pay 7 to 15 for a VF/XF+ coin. Certified 63/64 should bring 40-65, 65/66 should see 70 to 120. Lower-end raw Unc coins can sometimes be cherrypicked for 15-25. While the coin had a large ring of pretty dark blue toning on the reverse, I can proffer no explanation as to why this coin would sell at anywhere near this level. This is the highest price point I have seen a 1/5 Sol bring outside of the MS 68 1897 VN, 1886 Proof, and 1885 A.C. The 1903 PCGS 62 that went for 227.50 is also quite surprising.
