Owner's Description
1915 is the key date for the 20th Century 1/5 Sols, and one of the most difficult dates to find in the entire series in any grade. All coins of this date appear to be struck with the pre-1912 obverse dies (rounded rather than pointed bottom to ponytail) with the letter "R" to the left of shield. Minor varieties: 1. o/o superscript o 2. 1915 19/19? 5/5? (FC) No premium for these varieties. o/o might be useful for authentication purposes however. Availability: G-VF: Matched only by 1893 and 1895, a very difficult date to find, even in low grade. This date only had a few years to circulate, but some examples did become fairly worn nevertheless XF-AU: Very Difficult, though an example should pop up once a year or so. Most coins of this date likely grade AU. 60-62: Rare 63-64: Rare 65-66: Rare Population Report (Jan 2015): NGC: One in 55; Two in 58; One in 64; One in 65 PCGS: None Graded Total at both services: 5; 2 in Uncirculated Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: Listed only as "RARE" with no price given in any grade! Current KM: VF: 145 XF: 270 UNc: 400 The 7th edition of KM raised the price of the 1915 dramatically from the previous VF: 40 XF: 70 UNC: 125. Certainly a price increase was called for, although moreso in Uncirculated. 200+ might be a stretch for a nice circ example to sell in the marketplace. However, I believe Gem or Near-Gem pieces can (or should) command the 400+. It's a thin market, so price fluctuation might be severe on a rare date such as this. I have seen no raw UNC's. Mintage: No mintage is given in KM for this date. Auction Results: Ebay 11/15/2010: High end AU example (advertised as UNC) sold for $17. Someone got a monster deal. (Curtesy Worthpoint whose prices are not always accurate) Ebay 2/2/2015: A decent looking AU50ish specimen (o/o variety) $72.49 Only two bidders competed for this coin (although because of early bidding, other bidders may have been priced out) Set Specimen:
