Owner's Description
1898 is not an overly difficult date, but a bit more difficult than the 1899, especially in circulated grades. (This is evidenced by the fact that no 1898's were offered for sale from mid November-mid February 2014/15) Often comes with Prooflike surfaces, just like it's cousin 1898 1/2 Dineros. The varieties are a bit confusing. Minor Varieties by Flatt: 1. 1898/8 No initials JR 2. 1898/8 No initials JR O/O in SOL 3. No initials JR 4. Initials JR, o/o in superscript o 5. Initials JR, o/o in superscript o, wide J.F. This is Flatt's list of varieities. I'm going to leave it intact, and report what I've seen in my own list: 1. No initials JR, Wide J. F., Closed 9 2. No initials JR, Close J. F., Closed 9 3. No initials JR, Wide J. F., Open 9 4. No initials JR, Close J. F., Closed 9, O very high in SOL I have not seen any coins with the initials "JR", nor have the main grading services graded any as such. Thus, if they exist, they are rare. Except one, all coins I've examined are closed 9. I have only seen one coin with the "High O". All varieties of this date have 6 berries in the laurel branches. Availability: G-VF: Somewhat Scarce in low circulated XF-AU: Somewhat Common 60-62: Somewhat Common 63-64: Somewhat Scarce 65-67: Somewhat Scarce I have only seen one nice Gem-y coin of this date. Population Report (Jan 2015): NGC: Two in 62; One in 63; One in 63 PL; One in 64; Three in 66; One in 66 PL; One in 67 PCGS: One in 63; One in 64; One in 65 Total at both services: 13; 13 in Uncirculated; 6 in Gem or better; 2 Prooflike 1898 is the only date in the entire 1/5 Sol series assigned Prooflike status by a TPG. Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 1.20 VF: 1.70 XF: 2.50 Current KM: Closed 9: VF: 9 XF: 11 UNC: 30 Open 9: VF: 11 XF: 16 UNC: 55 The Open 9 is apparently more rare, if anyone cares much. Expect to pay $50ish for an MS 65, up to $100 for a nice Prooflike MS 66. Mintage: 350,000 Auction Results: Ebay 7/19/2009 MS 66 PL $58 (WP) Heritage 6/13/2010 PCGS MS 65 OGH $126.50 Nice Frosty Reflective Coin - Holder say "1898-L"?
