Owner's Description

1911 is the first year of a minor change to the design. A small "R" can be found to the left of the shield in the rock. Coins with the "R" also have a pointed bottom to Liberty's ponytail rather than rounded. 1911 is an available date, both in circulated and uncirculated grades. In Gem or better the coin becomes more difficult. Minor varieties: 1. With "R" 2. Without "R" - Of dozens of coins, I have seen one with no R. Indeed, it has a rounded bottom to the ponytail. 3. Recut 1? (FC - Claimed on ebay, though difficult to see in the photo) All coins appear to come with a large superscript o. With "R" is far and away the common type. I'd consider no-"R" coins rare. Availability: G-VF: Common XF-AU: Common 60-62: Common 63-64: Somewhat Common - raw UNCS from 60-64 do appear on the market occasionally 65-66: Scarce Population Report (Jan 2015): While the Pop data is separated into "FG" and "FG with R", I believe most all 1911's likely have the "R" on the rock to the left of MS. Liberty, it's just not something NGC is always paying attention to. My MS 65☆ is listed in the Pop data as being with "R", they did not designate to put the "R" after "FG" on the label. NGC: One in 62; One in 63; One in 65☆; Two in 66 PCGS: One in 64 Total at both services: 6; 6 in Uncirculated; 3 in Gem or better I have also seen one NGC "UNC DETAILS-Surface Hairlines" on ebay. Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: .90 VF: 1.25 XF: 2 Current KM: VF: XF: 22.50 UNC: 30 KM has the same value for with and without "R". Value in UNC is up from $9 in 2009. 1911 is a more common date, and the price levels here seem appropriate. However, the fact that KM lists 1906 and 1907 $6 high in UNC rings untrue. The very common 1916 should also not bring an extra .50 cents over 1911 in UNC. A top of the line MS 66 could bring $100. I'm suprised how well mid grade circs do sometimes. Set Specimen: The first and currently only ☆ given to a Peruvian Seated Liberty coin of any denomination (quite possibly the first star in all of Peruvian numismatics). The photos don't do this coin justice. At the wrong angle the coin can long dull or blotchy. In proper light, shades of turquoise, sea green, light blue, neon green, and fiery orange/red dance over the coin. Strike is good, if a bit weak in areas, as is normal in the late dates. Full head is present. Contact marks are at a minimum. The last 1 could possibly be recut.
