Owner's Description

This 6.75 grams, .903 Ag, 2 Reales coin was minted sometime between 1777 and 1783 in Mexico City, Mexico under Assayers F F. The Assayers were Francisco de la Pena and Francisco Arance Cobos. The coin is 28mm in diameter and features the bust of Carlos III facing right on the obverse with the lettering CARLOUS III DAI GRATIA. The reverse depicts the Hispanic Arms, a pair of pillars separated by a simple shield with lions, castles, pomegranate and three centralized Fleurs-de-Lis. This coin spent 200+ years under water and it has been certified by NGC as a Genuine Shipwreck coin and as treasure from the wreckage of the El Cazador. The Two Reales were equal to a Quarter in United States currency. During this time a quarter was also known at Two Bits. The El Cazador set sail from Vera Cruz, Mexico for New Orleans on January 11, 1784. She was carrying thousands of silver coins to stimulate the Spanish holdings in the New World. After a month at sea, the El Cazador sank in the Gulf of Mexico (just 50 miles south of New Orleans), taking with it, the precious cargo and hundreds of lives. This was a disastrous blow for Spain. It could not produce enough silver coins to stabilize the economy in New Orleans. Sixteen years later, in 1800, Spain agreed to cede Louisiana back to France. Three short years later, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for 3 cents an acre. This purchase doubled the size of our nation.
