Owner's Description
A nice "economy priced" example of this one year type / mint mistake. The omission of the word "cents" in the design resulted in the production of the so-called "racketeer nickels." Some pieces were given reeded edges, gold plated and then passed a five dollar gold pieces, which were of a very similar size. Today there are more examples of these "racketeer nickels" that what existed in the 19th century. For educational purposes I have posted a picture of what is probably a real "racketeer nickel." The piece has been given a fine reeded edge and a dose of gold plating.
