Owner's Description
The Nickel Three Cent Piece was a product of the Civil War. During the war there was wide-spread hoarding of U.S. coin that resulted in serious coin shortages. The first Nickel Three Cent Pieces were issued in 1865. It was hoped that a three cent piece, that contained no silver, would remain in circulation. The coin was popular at first, but in later years it fell into disuse. Finally Congress stopped production of the denomination in 1889.

The present piece is a very attractive Proof Cameo coin with bright white luster.
