Owner's Description
The discovery of gold in California, and resulting increased supply of the yellow metal changed the price ratio between gold and silver. As a result almost all of the U.S. silver coins had a melt value that was higher than their face value. This forced the government to reduce the weight of the those silver coins. This change in weight was noted on the coin by the addition of arrows on either side of the date.
