Owner's Description

Mid way through 1797, Robert Scott, the chief U.S. mint engraver, adapted the heraldic eagle design to the ten dollar gold piece or eagle. The change silenced critics who had labeled the bird on the small reverse coins as a "turkey buzzard."

These large and impressive coins were popular with the bankers and members of the merchant class who used them, but the coins also provided a convenient way for U.S. citizens to export gold from The United States. Noting this, President Thomas Jefferson suspected the coinage of the eagle in 1804. The U.S. mint would not issue another eagle until 1838.
