Owner's Description

Blazing luster gives this piece a great look. The 1907 St. Gaudens double eagle is of historic interest because it was Charles Barber’s first interpretation of the St. Gaudens design. Barber’s work has been widely criticized, but given the huge production problems that beset the High Relief coins, this was a practical alternative. The High Relief coins had to be struck in one thousand coin batches multiple times from the same die pair in order to bring up all of the detail properly. That was a totally impractical procedure for a business strike issue. This attractive design could be struck in one blow from the dies.

The mintage for the 1907 Arabic numeral St. Gaudens double eagles was 361,667 pieces. They were all struck in December. Many of them were saved, which has made it a common issue.

Many 1907 and 1908 No Motto double eagles display relatively weak strikes and indifferent luster. This coin is an attractive exception to that generalization.
