Owner's Description
In 1866 the motto “In God we trust” was added to all of the gold and silver coins that had enough space in their designs to accommodate it. This expression of faith was inspired by the horrors that the nation had experienced during the bloody Civil War. The With Motto half eagle would be issued until the design was replaced in 1908.
This 1901 eagle is an attractive example of the type with strong mint luster and ultra smooth surfaces. I acquired this piece back when I was in high school in the mid 1960s from Stacks' in New York City during a field trip the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference.
