Owner's Description
Due to the rising price of silver, the Treasury Department ordered a stop to redeeming silver certificates with silver dollars in 1964. The following year, the Coinage Act of July 23, 1965 placed a five-year moratorium on the minting of standard dollar coins. After the moratorium expired, congress passed legislation to issue a new dollar honoring two term president and war hero Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had recently died on March 28, 1969. On November 1, 1971, the Eisenhower Dollar with a copper-nickel composition entered circulation. For collectors, there was a 40% silver-clad edition of the Eisenhower Dollar sold at a premium. This MS-65, 1971-S silver clad Eisenhower Dollar came in special mint packaging called a “Blue Pack”. The silver proof version came in a “Brown Pack”. The Eisenhower Dollar commemorates the life and service of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Nicknamed Ike, Dwight D. Eisenhower obtained the rank of five-star general in the Army and became the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II. As the Allied Commander in Europe, General Eisenhower, collaborating with our allies, planned and oversaw the successful D-Day invasion of Normandy. After the war, Ike served two terms as President of the United States. Among President Eisenhower’s many accomplishments are establishing the interstate highway system and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). In the area of foreign policy, President Eisenhower escalating the cold war with the Soviet Union and oversaw the Korean War.
