Owner's Description

Collectors everywhere have President Theodore Roosevelt to thank for a renaissance in coinage design during the early 20th century. His vision for our nation was to have coins that were reminiscent of our roots in ancient western culture and art. These coins often struck in higher relief, are rich in symbolism and beauty. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar, designed by the same sculptor as the Mercury Dime, Adolf A. Weinman, is no exception. What strikes me most about this beautiful MS-65, 1944-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar, is that it projects an image of national strength. This would become very important to the American psyche, as the times of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar were turbulent times in our nation’s history. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar would see us through World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, and a brief time of prosperity during the “Roaring 20’s”. The obverse of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar features “Lady Liberty” robed in the flag of the United States, carrying a bough of laurel and oak branches, symbolic of civil and military glory, striding towards a new sunrise. The reverse design features a majestic eagle, virile and strong, perched on a mountain crag. Out of the crag grows a sapling mountain pine, symbolic of America. An important coin in our nation’s history, the obverse of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar currently graces the Silver American Eagle. I purchased this particular Walking Liberty Half Dollar directly from another Collectors Society Member.
