Owner's Description
Recently, I finished a date/mint set of Mercury dimes grading mostly AG to VG housed in an intercept folder. With a complete set of low-grade coins, I wanted to purchase a high-grade “full split band” example to represent the entire collection and this beautiful MS-66, 1940 FSB Mercury Dime fits the bill. The name “Mercury Dime” is a bit of a misnomer as “Winged Liberty Head” is a more accurate term. The representation on the obverse that looks like the Roman god Mercury is, in fact “Lady Liberty”. The wings on Liberty’s headdress represent freedom of thought. The fasces on the reverse of the Mercury Dime represent authority, while the battle-ax stands for preparedness. The olive branch beside the fasces symbolizes a desire for peace.
