Issue #172 features another appearance by Gorilla Grodd. It is probably the toughest book to find in high grade in the entire run because of the black cover. While our book is just a 9.8, it is tied with only one copy for highest graded. It replaces the 9.4 Twin Cities copy we have owned for many years and comes from the Pacific Coast Collection. Considered the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface, the Pacific Coast collection was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.
2021 Update: Well, I have now seen the 9.6, as the owner contacted me a few months ago. As I recall, it came from the Rocky Mountain Collection, which is the best pedigree collection of later Flashes. Unfortunately, he is not selling the book, but I did buy my GL #8 9.4 from him.
2025 Update: The 2021 Update is now irrelevant with our acquisition of the PC 9.6, but I left it because it reminds me of all the years we tried to find a 9.6 copy of this book. That it comes from the Pacific Coast Collection just makes the find that much more speacial. We acquired it on the day it was listed for sale, July 6, 2025, on Worldwide Comics. Thanks Stephen, you have no idea how many years we have looked for this book.
