Owner's Description

Primitive savages overcome the world greatest superheroes in Issue #84, say it ain’t so?

In the story, at the annual presentation of the Nobel Prizes, the Justice League receives a special award for its rescue of a top chemist from the crime syndicate known as the 100, and Dr. Viktor Willard wins the Peace Prize for his creation of the Pax serum, which turns aggressors into "doves." Unknown to all, however, Willard has gone mad, and intends to use the serum to unleash hatred in all the world's nations, causing humanity to exterminate itself. His fiancee, Phyllis Temple, escapes his island hideaway and warns the Justice League, but even they are powerless when Willard threatens to kill Phyllis if they intervene. It is Villard's own android creation, Nether Man, who turns on his master, and sacrifices his own existence to save Phyllis and the world.

Our 9.8 is one of three highest graded copies as of June 2020 and comes from the Savannah Collection. Numbering around 40,000, the Savannah Collection is one of the largest collections ever pedigreed. It was assembled by a man born around World War I who began setting aside comic books in the '50s. He eventually befriended a local distributor who supplied him with comics each week, which he carefully stacked on shelves and in bins. He continued buying until his death at 95 in 2010; Shelton Drum was contacted to sell the collection, which was ultimately auctioned through Heritage in 2011. While it contained comics from every company, the Savannahs are best known for their DC comics, particularly the more esoteric genres like war, romance and western, which are not usually present in pedigree collections. The books have no identifying marks.

2021 Update: And now there are four.....9.8s topping the census that is.
