Owner's Description

In The Mystery of Flash's Third Identity the Flash tangles again with the Top. Our book comes from the Western Penn Collection and is the lone 9.8 and the single highest graded copy of this issue. It is also special in that, as of 2020, the next highest graded book is a 9.4. Surfacing in the '90s, much of this collection's history is shrouded in mystery. We know that both a father and his son accumulated the collection from the '60s to '80s, and there was allegedly a cache of Golden Age comics as well that may have been sold earlier (to date only a handful of Tarzans prior to 1961 have been CGC graded). Stuart Friedlander brought the collection to market, and several Silver Age publishers were represented, although Marvel was the predominant company. Known for very high grades and exceptional page quality starting in 1961, the Western Penn copies have been well documented, but do not exhibit any identifying marks.

While Pacific Coast is generally the #1 Silver Age Pedigree, there are mini-runs where Western Penn books surpass even the Pacific Coast examples. Flash 141/142 is another example of what makes Western Penn such a coveted Silver Age Pedigree.

This book was first offered to me by another private collector many years ago and I passed based on price and the fact that I had the Pacific Coast book. But eventually when a second chance arose to acquire the book from the person who bought it on my first opportunity, I purchased it for cash and books in a package deal, which included issues #130, #140 and #170.

2023 Update: Still King!

2024 Update: Damn it, CGC is killing me this year. This book becomes the 31st single highest graded book in this collection that has now lost such status. As of today, we have more books that were single highest graded than ones who still retain that status.
