Owner Comments:

Ornate piastra (Scudo of 80 Bolognini) issued under Clement IX featuring the papal arms on the obverse and the throne of St Peter on the reverse. Classified as DAV-4072, Muntoni 4, Berman 1969. The wooden throne a relic conserved in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in Rome, Italy. Tradition claims the throne belonged to the Apostle Saint Peter, the leader of the Early Christians in Rome and first Pope. The wooden throne was a gift from Emperor of the Romans Charles the Bald to Pope John VIII in 875. The relic is enclosed in a sculpted gilt bronze casing constructed between 1647 and 1653.
