Owner Comments:

In 1972 the first of the commemorative medals were issued. The bronze specimen featured George Washington on the obverse and the Sons of Liberty tree on the reverse. Washingtons portrait is based on sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon's famous bust, commonly seen on the present-day quarter. (The Sons of Liberty were an early group of patriots said to be responsible for the Boston Tea Party in 1773. The tree is symbolic as an early meeting place of the group, and as a site where local grievances were addressed.)

This medal came encased in a plastic capsule & black clam-shell packaging, is dated 1972 and graded Mint-State 65 Deep Proof-like.

It is also noteworthy that this initial year of release, 1972, was the only year which no silver or gold proof versions were offered.
