In December 1921, the new Peace Dollar was approved by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, replacing the Morgan Dollar. and marking peace between the U.S. and Germany. The new silver dollar was designed by renowned Italian American Sculptor Anthony de Francisci (1887 - 1964). The high relief of the 1921 design was found impractical for circulating coinage and was modified to low or shallow relief in 1922.

The Peace Dollar symbolized the country’s coming of age as an international power, while recognizing the sacrifices made by its citizens in World War I and celebrating victory and peace. Peace Dollars were minted from 1921 through 1935 and were struck at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver Mints. In honor of the 100th anniversary of this iconic silver dollar, the United States Mint is proud to present the 2021 Peace Dollar. This rendition was created through the use of modern technology and historical U.S. Mint assets. It is struck in stunning high relief and has a beautiful uncirculated finish.

The act to produce 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollars to honor the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan Dollar and the first Peace Dollars was wildly popular in the numismatic community and the anticipated demand for these new coins was expected to be very high. Despite the high anticipated demand for these coins the Covid 19 Pandemic created supply chain problems for the U.S. Mint which made it impossible to obtain enough silver to meet expected collector demand. Consequently the mint limited production of the 2021 Peace Dollar to 200,000. The 2021 Peace Dollar was offered by the U.S. Mint for pre-ordering on August 10, 2021, at noon eastern time, with product shipment to begin in October 2021. Demand was so high that the entire issue sold out within minutes.
