Morgan & Peace Dollars 100th Anniversary Sets, 2021

Category:  Series Sets
Owner:  JAA
Last Modified:  6/11/2022
Set Description
In 1921, the US Mint retired the Morgan Dollar — a storied coin of the Old West — and introduced the Peace Dollar — a symbol of America becoming a world power. Now, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this significant transition, the US Mint is releasing 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollars. Demand was intense for this extraordinary opportunity to own a modern-day issue of these iconic and incredibly popular American coins.

The 2021 issues include five versions of the Morgan Dollar to commemorate the mints that produced the original coins. One has no mintmark to recognize the historic Philadelphia Mint, which did not use a mintmark. Another features the “S” mintmark of the San Francisco Mint, while the third features the “D” mintmark of the Denver Mint. The former mints in New Orleans and Carson City are celebrated with privy marks, which are raised ovals with the original “O” or “CC” mintmark.

The 2021 Peace Dollar has no mintmark and is being produced by the Philadelphia Mint. Its dazzling high relief appearance is in honor of the original coin, which was struck in high relief.

The 100th anniversary of the transition from the Morgan Dollar to the Peace Dollar in 1921 is an important event in numismatics, as these are among the most prominent and beloved American coin series. Called the “King of 19th Century Coins,” the Morgan Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904 and again, unexpectedly, in 1921. The Peace Dollar, minted from 1921 to 1935, symbolizes the country’s modernization in the 20th century in addition to commemorating the peace achieved after World War I.

“For many people, the Morgan and Peace Dollars helped to spark the pursuit of coin collecting,” commented Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman and Grading Finalizer. “The release of new Morgan and Peace Dollars in 2021 will appeal to virtually all collectors and inspire a new generation of numismatists.”

The Morgan Dollar was designed by Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan (1845-1925) and was minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. This iconic silver dollar represented the country’s westward expansion and industrial development in the late 19th century. Morgan Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City, New Orleans, and Denver Mints. Morgan Dollars were struck at the New Orleans Mint from 1880 trough 1904. Since the New Orleans Mint is no longer in operation it was decided that 2021 Morgan Dollars honoring the New Orleans Mint would have an 'O' Privy Mark rather than a Mint Mark and be produced at the Philadelphia Mint.

The Morgan Dollar is one of the most beautiful, historic, and widely collected coins in numismatics. The act to produce 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollars to honor the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan Dollar and the first Peace Dollars was wildly popular in the numismatic community and the anticipated demand for these new coins was expected to be very high. Despite the high anticipated demand for these coins the Covid 19 Pandemic created supply chain problems for the U.S. Mint which made it impossible to obtain enough silver to meet expected collector demand. Consequently the mint limited production of the 2021 'O' Morgan New Orleans Privy Mark Dollars to 175,000. The 2021 'O' Morgan New Orleans Privy Mark Dollar was offered by the U.S. Mint for pre-ordering on May 24, 2021, at noon eastern time, with product shipment to begin in October 2021. Demand was so high that the U.S. Mint Web site crashed before most customers were unable to place an order, and the entire issue sold out within minutes.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the last year of the ‘Morgan Dollar’ the United States Mint proudly presented the 2021 Morgan Dollar, created through the use of modern technology and historical U.S. Mint assets. It has a beautiful uncirculated finish.

OBVERSE DESIGN
The obverse features Liberty in profile. A cap, flora, and a crown incused with the word "LIBERTY" adorn her head, while 13 stars, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the year of issue encircle her.

REVERSE DESIGN
The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings clasping arrows and an olive branch, accompanied by a wreath. reverse inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "ONE DOLLAR." The reverse also features an "O" privy mark, in recognition of the historic United States Mint, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Morgan Dollars were struck at the Carson City Mint from 1878 trough 1893. Since the Carson City Mint is no longer in operation it was decided that 2021 Morgan Dollars honoring the Carson City Mint would have an 'CC' Privy Mark rather than a Mint Mark and be produced at the Philadelphia Mint.

Consequently the mint limited production of the 2021 'CC' Morgan Carson City Privy Mark Dollars to 175,000. The 2021 'CC' Morgan Carson City Privy Mark Dollar was offered by the U.S.

The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings clasping arrows and an olive branch, accompanied by a wreath. reverse inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "ONE DOLLAR." The reverse also features an "CC" privy mark, in recognition of the historic United States Carson City Mint.

Morgan Dollars were struck at the Denver Mint only in 1921.

Consequently the mint limited production of the 2021 D Morgan Dollar to 175,000. The 2021 D Morgan Dollar was offered by the U.S. Mint for pre-ordering on August 3, 2021, at noon eastern time, with product shipment to begin in October 2021. Demand was so high that the entire issue sold out within minutes.

The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings clasping arrows and an olive branch, accompanied by a wreath. reverse inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "ONE DOLLAR."

Morgan Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1878 through 1904 and again in 1921.

Consequently the mint limited production of the 2021 (P) Morgan Dollar to 175,000. The 2021 (P) Morgan Dollar was offered by the U.S. Mint for pre-ordering on August 10, 2021, at noon eastern time, with product shipment to begin in October 2021. Demand was so high that the entire issue sold out within minutes.

The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings clasping arrows and an olive branch, accompanied by a wreath. reverse inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "ONE DOLLAR."

In December 1921, the new Peace Dollar was approved by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, replacing the Morgan Dollar. and marking peace between the U.S. and Germany. The new silver dollar was designed by renowned Italian American Sculptor Anthony de Francisci (1887 - 1964). The high relief of the 1921 design was found impractical for circulating coinage and was modified to low or shallow relief in 1922.

The Peace Dollar symbolized the country’s coming of age as an international power, while recognizing the sacrifices made by its citizens in World War I and celebrating victory and peace.
