The Pennsylvania State Quarter was released on March 8, 1999 as the second coin in the 50 State Quarter Program. The reverse features the statue “Commonwealth” that sits atop Pennsylvania’s state capitol dome in Harrisburg, an outline of the state, the State motto “Virtue, Liberty, Independence”, and a keystone honoring Pennsylvania’s nickname “The Keystone State.” The keystone imagery links back to Pennsylvania’s location as the middle or keystone state of the original 13.
