Gloucestershire Gloucester DH #8
Obverse: A view of a single story ecclesiastical building - WHITE FRIARS
Reverse: The Arms of the Borough of Gloucester surmounted by a Cap of Maintenance with CITY TOKEN at the sides of the shield and P. KEMPSON FECIT alongside
Edge: Plain
Diesinker: Thomas Wyon
Manufacturer: Peter Kempson
Weight: 16.66g
Rarity: Scarce
The building shown on the token is Greyfriars, a medieval monastic house founded in about 1231 and not the ancient friary of the Carmelite or White Friars which once stood outside the North Gate. Nothing remains of the Carmelite building which was destroyed some centuries before the token was issued.
One of the Gloucester building tokens made for collectors by Peter Kempson.
Atkins: Gloucestershire 19
