Owner Comments:

For the year 1870 this set contains a Shield Five Cent Piece in AU-Details Cleaned condition as certified by NGC.The cleaning of this coin must have occurred many years ago and really doesn’t detract from it’s appearance very much. This coin has nice even surfaces in spite of the earlier cleaning and would be a pleasing coin to have in any collection.
This Shield Nickel was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during the first term of our nation’s 18th President Ulysses S.Grant.During the year 1870 three confederate states were readmitted to the Union - Virginia became the 8th State to re-enter the Union on January 27,1970,Mississippi became the 9th State to re-enter the Union on February 3,1970,Texas was the 10th State to re-enter the Union on March 30,1870 and the 15th amendment to the Constitution of the United States was added on the same day Texas re-entered the Union - March 30,1870. The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the federal government and each state from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude". It was ratified on February 3, 1870, as the third and last of the Reconstruction Amendments.
