Owner Comments:

Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The reverse design for the Half Penny shows a Dutch East India merchantman in almost full sail on the sea. The proof strikings saw a change in reverse designfrom 1930, & that was hereafter utilised in subsequent years for both proof & business strikings. The inscription found on the 1931 Half Penny proof reverse remained the same for 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935 &1936. The changes on the reverse applied to the inscription where the denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "1/2 D" & the Afrikaans word "ZUID" from previous years was changed to "SUID". Reverse design artist: Kruger Gray (KG above waterline next to ship) Obverse design artist: Bertram Mackennal(BM on truncation of bust).
