Middlesex Kempson's Series of London Buildings and Gates DH #59 - Diesinker: Thomas Wyon, Manufacturer: Peter Kempson. Obverse: a view of a large building with wings and forecourt THE IRONMONGERS ALMSHOUSE Ex: ERECTED MDCCXIII in two lines between two small sprigs of leaves. Reverse: The Arms of the City of London between palm branches crossed beneath the shield, legend on a raised rim LONDON PENNY TOKEN, a small ornament at the bottom. Edge: Plain.
The Ironmonger's Almshouse, open to poor members of the Company, was founded in 1686 by the Lord Mayor of London, a onetime Master of the Company. A statue of the founder with the civic sword at his side can be seen above the entrance.
