Santa Marta is a city on the shore of the Caribbean Sea, founded in 1525. It is the oldest city in Colombia. Santa Marta was one of several areas in Colombia that remained under Spanish rule longer. Besieged by Republican forces, Royalists made a necessity coinage that reflects certain design elements of Spanish Imperial issues.
