Casa Loma
Toronto, Canada
Visited: 10 Jul 2014
Mintage is 2,784. Second coin of the series.
In 2014 we drove the Trans Canadian Highway, entering at International Falls, MN. Going East we drove all the way to Nova Scotia spending about 3 weeks taking in all of the sites. In Toronto we discovered Casa Loma. This is North America’s only full sized castle and Toronto’s premier historic attraction. It somewhat reminded us of the Pena Palace in Cascais, Portugal.
In 1911, Sir Henry Pellatt engaged noted architect E J Lennox to help him realize a lifelong dream, the creation of an Edwardian castle on top of a hill overlooking Toronto. It took 300 men three years to complete the nearly 200,000 square foot castle at a cost of $3.5 million (at that time). Situated on 5 acres, it was the largest private residence in Canada.
This is a photo I took of the actual stained-glass dome. The coin depicts just the center circle.
