Owner Comments:
Both obverse and reverse dies were used for regular-issue coinage in 1865. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Traditionally, Judd-432 has been listed as a die trials issue but there was no intent to change the design or metal composition of the Seated Liberty half; the only planned change was the introduction of the motto, as occurred in 1866. The motto is missing on this piece. Like many off-metal strikings, it is possible that this issue was actually produced by Mint employees for sale to collectors. It is estimated that a population of no more that a half-dozen of this pieces survive. This is a lovely piece with brown, blue, and scarlet color.
