Owner Comments:

In 1931 the reverse design changed only slightly in the inscription in terms of the spelling of the word ZUID which was changed to the more Afrikaans spelling SUID. The obverse design shows the crowned & coronation enrobed bust of King George V with inscription GEORGIVS V REX IMPERATOR. The reverse design shows a garnished CROWNED (unlike the florin which is uncrowned) shield quartered with the symbols for the four provinces of the union namely the figure of HOPE for the CAPE, 2 running wildebeeste facing left for NATAL, an orange tree for the ORANGE FREE STATE & an ox wagon for the TRANSVAAL - THE ARMS OF THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA. The date is split on either side of the shield. The inscription reads * SOUTH - AFRICA * SUID - AFRIKA * 2 1/2 SHILLINGS. The reverse design remained unchanged until 1931.
