Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The reverse design for the Half Penny shows a Dutch East India merchantman in almost full sail on the sea. The inscription found on the 1928 Half Penny reverse remained the same for 1929, 1930 & for 1931 business strikes. The 1931 Half Penny Proof had changes made to its reverse design. The denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "1/2 PENNY". Reverse design artist: Kruger Gray (KG above waterline next to ship) Obverse design artist: Bertram Mackennal(BM on truncation of bust).
