Owner Comments:
Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The reverse design for the Penny shows a Dutch East India merchantman in almost full sail on the sea. The inscription found on the 1926 Penny reverse remained the same for 1927, 1928, 1929 & 1930. The change on the reverse applied to the inscription where the denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "PENNY". Furthermore the rope rigging changed with subtle differences noticeable between the top two sails & by the centre mast bottom sail. Reverse design artist: Kruger Gray (KG above waterline next to ship) Obverse design artist: Bertram Mackennal(BM on truncation of bust).
