Coins for the Union of South Africa were first struck in 1923. The obverse design shows a side view bust of King George V for all denominations up to 1936. The reverse design for the Half Penny shows a Dutch East India merchantman in almost full sail on the sea. The inscription found on the 1923 Half Penny reverse remained the same for 1924, 1925 & 1926 with no coins struck for 1927. The denomination was reflected at 6 o'clock on the coin and reads: "1/2 PENNY 1/2".
