Owner Comments:
Totally original, deep green-gold skin over subdued luster. This is a late die state variety, with the diagnostic die break from the obverse rim at 7 o'clock to the tip of Liberty's bust. The obverse is well struck, with the reverse showing typical weakness of the eagle's details. Even with the disparity of strike between the obverse and reverse, I personally grade this coin at AU-50 obverse and XF-45 reverse, making the final grade a choice XF-45. A wire rim runs along the left obverse rim, as is usually found. This is the rarest of the Charlotte $2 1/2 Dollar series, with no more than 75-100 estimated to exist, putting it as the 3rd rarest Charlotte mint product, behind the 1849-C Open Wreath $1, and the 1842-C Small Date $5 Dollar.
