Owner Comments:
THIS COIN: This is the ELIASBERG specimen, one of the finest known examples. The coin exhibits swirling mint luster beneath iridescent blue, gray and golden toning evenly misting each side. The design elements are fully struck on both the obverse and reverse. There are no noticeable abrasions anywhere on the coin.
BACKGROUND: The mintage of the 1877-S Trade Dollar was, by far, the highest in the Trade Dollar series topping out at 9,519,000 business strikes. Most of this production was, again, shipped to China but some was distributed within the United States. Many were made for the Nevada Bank of San Francisco. All known examples are Type II/II but Type II/I specimens have occaisionally been reported.
