This special nickel was actually a part of a circulating commemorative set of coins. The four coins, issued in 2004 and 2005 celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This 2005 dated coin, which is called "the Ocean in view," marked the arrival of the explorers to the shores of the Pacific Ocean after their' long trek across the unsettled regions of the United States.
The three other coins in the set are "the Peace Medal" and "the Keelboat" which were issued in 2004. The other 2005 dated nickel was "the American Bison."
