A Key From the 960 Reis Series
João VI 960 Reis 1822-B XF40 NGC, Bahia mint, KM326.2, LMB-464. Overstruck on a Ferdinand VII Spanish Colonial 8 Reales. An issue absent from most advanced 960 Reis' collections, the 1822 960 Reis from the Bahia mint was struck in the year Brazil declared its independence from Portugal. On top of the chaotic historical background, it was struck in the somewhat provincial Bahia mint, exponentially scarcer than its Rio counterpart. The present offering displays a sound strike with bold denomination, mint and date, as well as a clear reverse with a well-defined shield. Worthy of attention from quality-minded and advanced 960 Reis type collectors.
