NGC US Coin Census for Early Half Dimes (1792-1837)

Owner Comments:

After the Philadelphia Mint issued last of the early half dimes in 1805, the facility did not issue another piece until 1829. Since those deposited silver for conversion into coins had a choice as to which coins they received in return, the half dime was at the bottom of the list. Those depositors preferred the larger coins, so the half dollar most often got the nod.

The Capped Bust half dime was a miniaturized version of John Reich's design, which he introduced for the half dollar in 1807. Reich left the mint in 1817. This is William Kness' interpretation of that design on the small coin.

The coin shown above is very sharply struck with all of the detail strong and even. It has original surfaces that have never been dipped. As such it is very scarce item. It has received a CAC sticker. The LM variety is #2 for 1834, which is common.
