Owner Comments:

I purchased this 1818 Matron Head large cent, die variety N10, at a local coin auction in June 1999 and submitted it to NGC in March 2023. This coin is presumably from the famous "Randall Hoard" that is said to have originated with several kegs of 1816-20 dated uncirculated large cents that were found beneath a railway station in 1869. This hoard is likely the source of most uncirculated large cents of the original 1816-35 Matron Head design and certainly the source of the vast majority of uncirculated 1818 N10s and 1820 N13s. This is my oldest uncirculated coin.

All 1816-39 large cents, except for the 1839 Braided Hair, are usually lumped together as a single Matron Head type. In my opinion the four different modified heads struck beginning at some point in 1835 (plain hair cord of 1835-37 and 1839/6, beaded hair cord of 1837-39, Silly Head and Booby Head of 1839) should be regarded as separate types. (Seated Liberty coins with or without arrows and/or rays are regarded as separate types with no difference in other design details.)

I took the photos before the coin was certified.
