Owner Comments:

In 1982, the United States issued its first commemorative coin in 38 years. The piece celebrated the 250th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. Elizabeth Jones designed the piece which was struck on 90% silver planchets. This marked the first time that a 90% silver had been issued by the U.S. in 1964. This commemorative was issued in the Uncirculated and Proof formats.

This “modest beginning” in commemorative coin has blossomed, or some collectors would say metastasized, into an ever expanding commemorative coin program. Whatever its merits, this first coin is quite attractive, and given the high mintages, within financial means of virtually all collectors.
