Owner Comments:
In 1864 mint officials introduced the motto, “In God we trust,” on the Two Cent piece. The motto reflected the intense religious feelings that many Americans had during the horrors of the Civil War. In 1866 it was decided that the motto would be added to all U.S. coins that had enough space within their existing designs to accommodate it. The smallest of the silver coins that met that criterion was the quarter. The motto appeared on a scroll, similar that found on the Two Cent piece, above the eagle on the reverse.
The coin shown above has the classic "blue Proof" toning with red and gold highlights. The Proof mirrors shine though the toning to give a very beautiful effect. I much prefer this look to the dipped out white color that is so often seen on other examples of these Liberty Seated coins.
The total Proof mint in 1863 was 600 pieces.
