Flying Eagle Cents we’re made of a copper - nickel alloy and replaced the cumbersome copper U.S. Large Cent which also came to an end in 1857 when the last Large Cent was manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1857 Flying Eagle Cent displayed here was graded AU 58 by NGC.On March 6,1857 the Dred Scott Decision was issued by the United States Supreme Court. The decision ruled that Scott,a slave, moved to a “free” State but never ceased to be a slave despite residing in a “free” State, denied him citizenship, and denied him the right to sue. Also,Elisha Otis installed the first safety passenger elevator on March 23,1857 in New York City at the E.V. Haughwout & Co. store. The President at this time was James Buchanan our 15th President who was just sworn into office on March 4,1857.John C. Breckinridge was Vice President and because President Buchanan never married the Country was without a First Lady.
