This is the first year of the Panda Commemoratives. It was minted in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Chinese 1982 Gold Panda Coin (noted on the coin in Chinese writing on the panda side of the coin). This is the only commemorative coin where the commemorative description is on the Panda side of the coin. It is also the only Piedfort (2oz) coin in the Silver Panda Series, the only proof strike of the Panda Commemoratives till 2019 and the only year in the 10-Yuan series till 2019 with the china-russia diplomatic issue that the Panda commemorative design was different than the regular issue. The coin was minted at the China Mint Company.

Mintage was only 10,000. The first commemorative issue, low mintage and the double thickness of the piedfort coin make this coin one of the more valuable in the Silver Panda Series.
