Owner Comments:
All 1815 quarters were struck from a single pair of dies, Browning B-1 variety. Of the 191 1815 quarters graded by NGC, 47 of them carry either an E or L counterstamp on the obverse above Liberty's head. 35 coins have the letter E and 12 have the letter L. This is one of the coins with the letter L.
The 1825 quarter also can be found with the same E and L counterstamps in the same position on that coin. NGC has graded 28 1825 coins with the counterstamp, 19 with the L and 9 with the E counterstamp. No one has been able to determine for certain who placed the stamps or for what purpose they served. One theory is that pieces so marked were presentation pieces issued by a school to note proficiency in either English or Latin. Many coins so marked survive in high grade, adding credence to this theory.
