Like the 1892, 1894, and 1899, the 1897 was a rare issue through the early 20th century. It seems likely that few of these coins found their way into circulation at the time of issue. In the 1950s, and even more so in the early 1960s, quantities of Uncirculated 1897 silver dollars emerged from bank vaults and the Treasury Building. As a result, this issue is now easily obtainable in all grades short of MS 66.
