Owner Comments:

The 1854-D gold dollar is a classic rarity in the series. Back in the 1960s Walter Breen claimed that only 25 to 30 examples existed. Walter's estimates were based too much on the auction catalogs that he had seen and written and therefore underestimated the total population. Today Doug Winter estimates that the total number of pieces is in the 100 to 125 range. That is still a rare coin by anyone's standards, especially when you factor in the many examples that have been stripped and cleaned.

The 1854-D gold dollar displayed above has a fair amount of wear as an EF-45, but it is still an attractive coin. There is a fair amount of mint luster in the protected areas and generally smooth surfaces. The coin's greatest "sin" is a lack of hair detail above Ms. Liberty's forehead, which is a reflection of some wear and a light strike, which is often seen on this date and mint mark combination.
